Which city is #2 in Art Deco buildings? Answer – Ashville, NC. Who knew? (South Beach, Miami is #1)

I am now back in Albany, remembering my time spent at Black Mountain Home for Children, NC, a truly enjoyable volunteer destination. While there I did take a storytelling trolley tour of Ashville to learn the how and why of this charming city. No, did not see any Black bears, but did see white squirrels in Brevard (2 towns over). where I was assisting with the BMH Plant Sale. They are adorable. Brevard does have a fabulous bakery. Enjoyed lime/coconut danish and Molasses Ginger cookies.
Back to the Ashville tour: after our informative tour, I got a “walking” map from the Visitor Center. For the next two hours, art deco prevailed. Reason: the city was so poor after the “crash”, the city could not afford to bulldoze! A “lucky” twist on despair. Enjoyed the arches, spires, bold eclectic style that combines traditional craft motifs with the Machine Age. It was chilly with 50 mph wind gusts! The Biltmore home was impressive at 220 rooms, but the charm lies in the gardens, impeccably designed, massive bursts of pink, yellow, red and orange azaleas; pink, red and white tulips. Lovely. Discovered a Ramps Festival – enjoyed ramp meatloaf, ramp scrambled eggs w/fried potatoes, steamed cabbage, cornbread and Clogging. Fun. FYI: check out the Foxfire book series. Fascinating history of mountain lifestyle and family interviews.
